Ross on Wye Rugby Club

We are a local club, where young and older players of all abilities are made welcome.

Are you sitting comfortablyโ€ฆ.We few, we happy few, we band of brothers. As another season is drawing to a close itโ€™s time to reflect, on what has been a brilliant year in the development of Ross Rugby U16โ€™s. Anyone who has participated in team sports can appreciate the bond that gels the great and best teams together. I know as rugby coaches and fans we are biased, but no sport epitomises this camaraderie more than rugby, surely! What other sport brings 6ft plus gym enthused beasts and 5ft nothing whippets, and expects them to do similar thingsโ€ฆhand skills, kicking, stamina, speed, agility, bravery, brute force and intelligenceโ€ฆ? As the season has progressed, the team has grown in numbers but more importantly in ability, confidence and togetherness. This was shown last weekend during a mini tournament hosted by Malvern, thank you very much, and attended by Luctonians and our near neighbours Ledbury. 3 very strong well established clubs who have been together for numerous years. Itโ€™s fair to say every game was played to a very good level, with lots of positives from a Ross perspective. These teams historically may have steamrolled Ross, but this band of brothers from Ross held strong and backed each other immensely. Yes we came out on the losing side, just, in all 3 gamesโ€ฆbut they were so closeโ€ฆcould easily have gone the other way in each game. Some key moments to highlightโ€ฆthe front row Louis, Nathan and Ollie held their ground under a lot of pressure, Howie adding support after a cameo on the flank, who is benching the most boys? Kenzie stepping into the 2nd row, ever trusted and adaptable, the rock for the teamโ€ฆ โ€œcan you smell what Kenzies cookingโ€โ€ฆas Ross were unfortunately without injured stars Danny, Seth, Alex B (thanks for supporting lads) and Rio, oh and Finn who was splashing about on a riverโ€ฆWe canโ€™t overlook Ed and Dylan E who both stepped up and covered 2nd row too, fantastic work guys, great clear outs going on ๐Ÿคœ, naturals. Harry and Matty their usual feistiness and hardworking throughout from back row, eat sleep repeat with these guys, our own Mini MaCawโ€™s. Zach conducting nicely at 9 (more Bernstein than Blakeyโ€ฆ๐ŸšŒ)kicking some lovely conversions and territory. Ellis calling the shots, whilst giving and taking them (what a hit ๐Ÿ’ช)at 10, beautiful hands in releasing Alex J, who ran in an amazing try that Forrest Gump would be proud ofโ€ฆhe just kept running and running, well done, his first for the club ๐Ÿซถ. Isaac and Quinn a really strong centre partnership developing, like watching, Tindall and Greenwood (feel free to offer your suggestions) both rewarded with tries Isaac bulldozing over from 5 yards, unstoppable from that distance ๐Ÿ’ช, Quinn beating numerous players with feet, pace and strength, to score his maiden try for the club too ๐Ÿซถ. Google Mr Dependableโ€ฆdid you find Owen? Noโ€ฆyou should! Covered too many positions, excellently. Ben, Luca and Dillion F, our footy lads, with their silky skills in the back 3, I say footy ladsโ€ฆboy can they tackleโ€ฆand no rolling around dramatically ๐Ÿ˜‰. peeps feel free to write into Tim (welfare officer)he loves group chats. Also to add for the parish notesโ€ฆmissing last weekend Lex, Walter, Riley and Josh, who have all added further strength of body, spirit and mind to our squadโ€ฆ๐Ÿ’ช.We have said goodbye to a couple who have gone on to pastures new, good luck, remember the door is never fully closedโ€ฆ๐Ÿ‘‹and to Oscar and Tyrese (Alex), letโ€™s turn all the training into action, playing matches next yearโ€ฆ๐ŸคœTo the parents and carers we say a massive thank youโ€ฆ.mucking in when needed and being a really good bunch of supporters and people ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿซถ.To the club, junior section and sponsors - big thank you for enabling and supporting our future Ross Hall of Famers. ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸผThe coaches, thanks teamโ€ฆever insightful, enthusiastic and constructiveโ€ฆthough please stop spamming the group chats Tim! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ˜‚And finally but arguably, most importantly Jon and Sarah..massive thanks for all you have done over the years and continue to doโ€ฆweโ€™d not have a team without you ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿซถ.Anyone for some U17โ€™s next yearโ€ฆ.! ... โ€ข R E S U L T S โ€ข*Old Crypts U16 v RRFC U16 - 19/19*To thine own self be trueโ€ฆ.Another entertaining tussle between 2 well matched teams in OC (Old Crypts) and Ross was played out last Sunday at The Memorial Ground, Gloucester. Not even Kathleen could stop these 2 groups of young men competing bravely. Now for regular readers to these distinctly average reports and Ross U16 fan base, The Rowies or The Wyverns (please feel free to come up with suggestions, send them on a postcard to Jon) youโ€™ll be fully aware of just how electric Ross are to startโ€ฆJust like Eric the Eel from Sydney 2000 Olympicsโ€ฆ๐Ÿ˜ฌโ€ฆ..however no sooner had the steam settled on the parents skinny lattes (less than 2 minutes), Ross were over for a tryโ€ฆconsistent pressure and quality ball retention and recycling, ended with Skipper Harry touching down, the following conversion went a little off radarโ€ฆbut Zachs moment would comeโ€ฆ0-5 Ross continued to edge the game all over the park, dominating the scrum, scrapping at the breakdown, and punching through in midfield. One such line break saw Quinn bursting through tackles, stretching OC defence to the last man and releasing Alex J to score what would have been a fantastic maiden tryโ€ฆbut the ball was deemed forwardโ€ฆ๐Ÿ˜ณoh for VARโ€ฆ๐Ÿ™„. OC came back into the game later in the half and scored a try which was well converted 7-5. This didnโ€™t dampen Rossโ€™ resolve though, on the cusp of half time, Rossโ€™ barrage of relentless attacks paid off with the ever present Wasp at the Picnic, Matty blasting over with the presence of mind to get closer to the postsโ€ฆZach clinically converted. HT 7-12.OC came out firing in 2nd half with Kathleen at their backsโ€ฆand attacking down the slopeโ€ฆIt felt like they had 16 men. (read between the lines folksโ€ฆ).Ross continued to compete and their defence was immense even when they were reduced to 14 (thanks Bertie Bassett). Some big hits from the Bomb-squad, Ollie, Louis and Riley were just a few to catch the eye. Eventually numbers and pressure counted and OC scored and converted their 2nd try 14-12. Entering into the final 10 minutesโ€ฆRoss back to full quota of 15โ€ฆsaw them striving against geography and the elements to push OC backโ€ฆstrength, speed and agility from Harry Travoltaโ€ฆcue music ๐ŸŽตโ€ฆโ€œHere I am,Prayin' for this moment to last,Livin' on the music so fineBorne on the windMakin' it mineโ€โ€ฆ.as he danced his way through the defence and critically under the postsโ€ฆallowing twin brother Zach a slightly easier conversionโ€ฆinto a stiff breeze which he nailed! Get inโ€ฆ14-19โ€ฆOne score in itโ€ฆtime ticking downโ€ฆsome silly if not debatable penalties resulted in Ross surrendering territory and OC scored to peg the scores level 19-19โ€ฆthe conversion was chased admirably down by a couple of flyersโ€ฆwho harassed the otherwise perfect kicker into an unlikely miss. With the clock in the red, Ross had one last roll of the diceโ€ฆstrong carries from Kenzie, Ed, Isaac and others ended with Danny being held up desperately over the line. Good defence in the end from OC - credit to them. Both teams probably felt they had chancesโ€ฆbut ultimately a hard fought draw was the result. At the start of the game coaches mentioned we can coach many things but attitude isnโ€™t one of themโ€ฆlast Sunday the boys stood up and showed fantastic attitude to a man! The previous week Ross entertained Worcester at home for a mid week training game. It was a cracking shortened fixture with both teams playing in great spirits. Worcs eventually winning 12-34 thanks to 2 bursts of try braces at the end of each half. Kenzie scored 2 tries, immense as ever and Zach kicked a conversion. ... See MoreSee Less
